The impact of organizational ambidexterity on the performance of Brazilian hospitals

Authors

Abstract

The study investigates the influence of Market Turbulence and Organizational Ambidexterity on the performance of private hospitals in Brazil, before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research is explanatory, carried out through structural equation modeling, in a total sample of 85 hospitals in Brazil. The results showed that the Market Turbulence positively impacted the exploitation and exploration of the hospitals surveyed in the two periods studied. Before the Pandemic, hospitals performance was influenced by exploitation and exploration skills. On the other hand, during the Pandemic, only exploration impacted performance. Hospitals had to learn and adapt, almost instantly, to a whole new scenario of national and international recommendations and parameters to receive and treat patients with the Coronavirus. However, it was found that the organizational ambidexterity construct affected hospital performance in 2019 and 2020 with similar forces.
