O JOB ROTATION AS A MECHANISM FOR DEVELOPING SKILLS

Abstract

Job rotation is the practice of rotating employees in jobs or work areas horizontally, without
promotion. One of the main objectives when applying it is to offer development and
learning to the employee who participates. Through interviews with professionals who
participated in the rotation experience, we sought to identify the benefits of job rotation
for employee development, the mechanisms by which practice develops their skills and
whether there are other relevant factors inherent in job rotation. The main results include:
acquisition of new technical / practical knowledge relevant to the accomplishment
of tasks; efficiency gains in carrying out the activities; increased critical sense of the employee;
obtaining a global view, or a more complete view of the business; communication
and relationship skills. In addition, participants identified job rotation as a more effective
learning method than formal training because it addresses learning in practice.
