BIOPOLITICAL REFLECTIONS ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN COVID-19 TIMES IN BRAZIL

Authors

Abstract

The following article develops a reflection on the subject of violence against women in Brazil from a critical perspective that interlaces gender studies, biopolitics and the practical reality of the care network for women and its weaknesses. Given the high levels of violence against women in Brazil, and, particularly, the massive increase of cases during the coronavirus pandemic, it is questioned if the attention given to the topic is considered in the public sphere as a matter of public health, or continues to be discussed as an issue related to the private sphere. The research reveals that, although there are legal instruments to carry out an effective fight against the problem, they remain, in many respects, just as formal measures, and, in the care network for women itself it is possible to identify deficiencies in the service provided. The reality of social relations demonstrates, on the other hand, the continuity of profound gender inequalities, which, combined with other asymmetries, contribute to an uneven distribution of the right to life with regard to women, since many live with oppressions that produce their lives as naked or mere lives. This fact is emphasized by the current pandemic situation, in which occurs a worsening of underreporting of the violations, mainly those suffered in domestic environment. The method of approach is the hypothetico-deductive in an exploratory research that adopts proceedings such as selection of the bibliography to the theoretical basis and the analysis of researches about the practical reality of violence against women in Brazil.
